Although 62-year-old Helen Shabangu from Mpumalanga, South Africa already has a husband and five children, she went ahead and got married for a second time to Saneie Masilela, a nine-year-old boy (pictured).
The reason for this union is because the boy was apparently visited by his deceased ancestors who told him if he didn’t marry her, something bad would happen to his family.
This is not the first time that the strange couple has tied the knot, but this time they did in public in front of over 100 guests, according to the Daily Mirror. The first time they got hitched was last year during a ritual just after Masilela was visited by his dead relatives.
Although the second event was purely to make the marriage official and the couple will not live together as husband and wife, other villages not attending the event found it to be “sickening,” according to the Mail.
Family members from both sides gathered to share a piece of the wedding cake, including the bride’s 66-year-old husband, Alfred Shabangu, who also attended the ritual event last year. He said that he didn’t care what other people thought because he didn’t have a problem with the marriage and neither did their children.
Masilela said that the reason he chose Helen to be his bride was because it would make his ancestors happy and he loved her. He added that he intends to study hard in school and one day get married to a lady of his own age.
Helen said that she was happy that Saneie chose her and pleased that she could keep his ancestors happy. She added that their wedding now was just a play marriage to keep bad things from happening to his family.
Although some people are disgusted by the thought of a young boy marrying such an older woman, Saneie’s mother Patience Masilela, said that everything went back to normal after the ceremony. She added that her child had never lived or slept with his bride and they did not intend to ever have children together.
The happy mother went on to say that their two families were very close and it was nice to have a wedding to keep their ancestors happy. She added that she believed that if not for the wedding, something bad would have happened to their family.
