On a morning that looked like any other, she goes into her coworker’s classroom to tell her she doesn’t feel well. Then everything speeds up: as her heart stops due to an undetected defect, she collapses.
She was 36 weeks pregnant.
Erica’s husband, Nathan, who works in the same school calls 911 as soon as he sees his wife lying on the floor.
Nathan tells the operator: “My wife is having a seizure. She’s on the floor. Oh my god! She’s pregnant and she’s foaming, unresponsive!”
Their coworkers manage to revive her with CPR, long enough for the paramedics to take her to the hospital. When she arrives at the hospital, Erica dies.
The doctors decide to deliver the baby via emergency post-mortem c-section. One doctor said: “There were two lives that were hanging in the balance the whole time.”
Little Elayna was born a healthy 9 pound baby, and her mom’s heart was restarted as soon as she delivered the baby. Erica’s heart defect was later corrected with a pacemaker.
