In England, they have a rather stereotypical view of the Americans as just a little bit dopey. Just sometimes, they do incredibly stupid things which justify their view of them. Rodger William Kelly did just that when he allegedly tried to have sex with an unconscious woman, and then claimed that he did it because “he was trying to save her life”. Police charged Kelly with first degree felony rape on Monday.
Mr Kelly, from St. George, Utah, was discovered giving CPR to his neighbor when the police responded to an emergency call. This would undoubtedly have reflected well on Mr Kelly. That would be, until the police actually questioned him as to what happened.
According to court documents, the 50-year-old told the officers that he had discovered his neighbor unconscious outside her apartment. Mr Kelly brought her upstairs to his apartment, changed her clothes and laid her on his bed. As she had been lying outside, he hugged her in an attempt to bring up her body temperature. As she was still a bit cold, he then tried to have sex with her. Obviously, that’s what we’d all do in that situation. When someone’s literally out cold, you don’t hold their hand, or lay them next to the radiator. You sleep with them. Duh.
The 29-year-old neighbor later alleged that she had been raped, and reported bruising on her pelvis and upper thighs as evidence. In this position, hospital staff should have been able to examine her to assess this claim, but her vagina had been meticulously cleaned while she was unconscious, according to court documents.
According to Mr Kelly, he and the victim had slept together before (presumably while she was conscious), but did admit that she had told him it wouldn’t be happening again.
