Former England midfielder Stan Collymore has ripped into the current Arsenal side, saying they’ve had the same problem for a number of years.
Arsene Wenger added well in the transfer market over the summer but Collymore feels Arsenal’s problem remains in midfield, where they lack the presence of a strong, authoritative player.
“In my very first column for a national newspaper, six years ago, I wrote that Arsenal were a five-a-side team playing in an 11-a-side league,” wrote Collymore for BleacherReport.
“Arsene Wenger's team are overloaded with diminutive attacking midfielders who drift out of games too easily. They lack a leader, and they have done for years.
“There is a myth that there are no good defensive midfielders on the market. I don't buy it. Arsene Wenger could have got one this summer, but he was too focused on attacking players and ignored their big weakness yet again.”
Wenger’s philosophy,
which he’s developed over a number of years at Arsenal, hasn’t changed.
He likes his teams to play possession based football, moving the ball around quickly and making it difficult for the opposition to settle and get into the game. It’s been the way he’s had all of his success at the club so the logic behind changing that style will be non-existent from his point of view.
Collymore does have a point in the respect that the Gunners have several players of the same type.
Mesut Ozil, Santi Cazorla and Alexis Sanchez are all examples of players who ideally want to play in the hole behind the main striker.
They’re all world class talents but to get them into the same team, Wenger is often forced to ask them to play out of position down the right or left hand sides of midfield where they are less effective.
His final point is also a fair one. Louis van Gaal has been criticised at Manchester United for the money he spent on players like Luke Shaw and Angel Di Maria but he got the job done.
Deals for Sami Khedira of Real Madrid or William Carvalho of Sporting would have been difficult but Wenger had time to get the deals done instead opting for other options in other positions.
Do you think Arsene Wenger has been ignoring Arsenal's weaknesses?
